A Few Seconds?

Only a few seconds of warning are possible for nearby earthquakes, but a lot can be accomplished in those seconds.

For some earthquakes, you may receive 30 seconds or more of warning, but almost all urban areas of California are located on top of faults. People there may get very little warning before the strong shaking starts.

Even a few seconds of warning can be useful. Here are some examples.
